Gardens Treasury consists of 5.8 hectares (14.4 acres) on the southeast side of the central business district of Melbourne, East Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The gardens are bounded by Wellington Parade, Spring Street, Treasury Place, and with the Fitzroy Gardens across Lansdowne Street, to the west. They are part of a network gardens of the city, including Fitzroy Gardens, Carlton Gardens, Flagstaff Gardens and Kings Domain. The gardens are listed on the Victorian Heritage list for their interest historical, archaeological, social, aesthetic and scientific (horticultural) importance for its outstanding design century century, and distribution path planting.
The gardens are within walking distance of Victoria and the House of Parliament is dominated by the old Treasury buildings, offices and state. Because of its central location near the city, they are a popular place as the departure or arrival for political rallies, demonstrations and festivals. The garden contains a pond and a number of monuments:
Sir William John Clarke Memorial. Marble bust, circa 1902, located near the Treasury building. Erected by public subscription and unveiled by the Governor of Victoria, July 22 1902.
Robert Burns Memorial. sculpture by bronze replica of an original GA Lawson built in the hometown of the poet Alloway, Scotland. Commissioned by the Caledonian Society in Melbourne, and the first built in St Kilda Road in 1904 and moved to the Treasury Gardens in 1970 because of work Road.
President John F. Kennedy Memorial. Bas-relief bronze by sculptor Raymond B. Ewers. Built in 1965 and located next to the pond especially landscaped and fountain.
History
1850 – The area of the garden has been left as open space after the failure to sell allowances due to the swampy nature of the terrain.
1867 – Clement Hodgkinson designed the gardens as a model of cross diagonally lined with trees. The willows have been planted around a pond.
1902 – William Guilfoyle, Director of Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne transforms ornamental pond in Japanese Garden. This garden is destroyed after the Second World War.
1929 – management of the gardens has been transferred to the city Melbourne
1934 – Gardens of the Treasury has been used by the community to celebrate centenary Victoria
1939 – block of toilets built for the Spring Carnival and Flower Festival. Recognized as important for its architectural design art deco unusual, decorative brick pattern and construction and extensive use of tiles with wrought iron details, including gates, doors, lights, signs and planters brick, with of know-how.
1965 – Monument was erected to U.S. President John F. Kennedy
1996 – Fitzroy and Treasury Gardens Master Plan has been adopted by the Council
